CAPTER VIII In this chapter, we are informed that in the 18th and 19th century the Europeans began to consult science. In consulting science, they had “positive response”. Before the renaissance period, it was a time called ‘dark age’ because in that time, science was never consulted rather, the word of the Pope was supreme that even sicknesses were said to be the cause of ones past sin. Art was called romanticism which related to humanism and naturalism. Bertrand Russell explained that in growth of individualism people deviated from the authority of the church. The approach of science was limited to only the study of natural phenomena, but according to August comté he believed that behavior can be studied. The chapter moves further to define “social science” as an area of study taht focuses on human behavior with others and the environment. The chapter gives examples of employing scientific methods in the social interactions between man and his environment. And individual has reasons for their actions and reason comes along with actions. An example is given when a person goes to the supermarket to buy a can of beef. Because the individual wants a can of beef, he goes to the supermarket. Basically, chapter 8 fills us in more about the problems, reasons, and causes that involve man as a study in social science.
