What is family The general definition of family is that it is a group of people related by blood,marriages,e.t.c. Family is defined as a specific group of people that may be made up of partners, children, parents, aunt, uncle cousins and grandparents. It can be a group of people who share common ancestors. It can also be referred to a social unit consisting of parent and the children they rear. A group consisting of two parents and their children living together. 2. Discuss the function of the family Producing offspring is not the only function of the family. Marriage sometimes establishes the legal father of a woman’s child or the legal mother of a man’s child; it oftentimes gives the husband or his family control over the wife’s sexual services, labor, and property. Marriage, likewise, often gives the wife or her family control over the husband’s sexual services, labor, and property. Marriage also establishes a joint fund of property for the benefit of children and can establish a relationship between the families of the husband and wife. None of these functions are universal, but depend on the society in which the marriage takes place and endures. In societies with a sexual division of labor, marriage, and the resulting relationship between a husband and wife, is necessary for the formation of an economically productive household. In modern societies marriage entails particular rights and privilege that encourage the formation of new families even when there is no intention of having children. • From the perspective of children, the family is a family of orientation: the family functions to locate children socially. • From the point of view of the parents, the family is a family of procreation: the family functions to produce and socialize children. • Marriage fulfills many other functions: It can establish the legal father of a woman’s child; establish joint property for the benefit of children; or establish a relationship between the families of the husband and wife. These are only some examples; the family’s function varies by society. 3. Discuss the Africa traditional family Family plays a central role in African society. It shapes such daily experiences as how and where individuals live, how they interact with the people around them, and even, in some cases, whom they marry. It can determine a person's political identity and the way money and property are transferred. In rural areas, the family typically remains the basic unit of agricultural production. Polygyny was widely practiced in Africa and it often formed the backbone of the traditional African family patterns. According to Mair, “….the polygynous joint family, consisting of a man, his wives, and their children, is the ideal for most Africans.”5 Studies conducted from the 1930s to 1950s indicate that polygyny was common virtually in all regions of Africa. In spite of the perversity of polygyny, there was evidence that it was on the decline. The major reason cited is that with increasing modern influences, marrying more than one wife became an economic burden. Even traditionally, ordinary citizens could not achieve marrying more than one wife. Often only Kings, chiefs and men who had wealth could afford it. Polygyny though set the tone and often determined the strength of the society and pattern of social organization of the traditional African family. 4. Discuss your nuclear family. A nuclear family, elementary family or conjugal family is a family group consisting of two parents and their children (one or more).[ It is in contrast to a single parent family, the larger extended family , and a family with more than two parents. Nuclear families typically center on a married couple;the nuclear family may have any number of children. There are differences in definition among observers; some definitions allow only biological children that are full-blood siblings, but others allow for a stepparent and any mix of dependent children including stepchildren and adopted children. Some sociologists and anthropologists consider the nuclear family as the most basic form of social o Draw your family tree My family tree🙂
