GUNDU-SEWUESE OLUWASHEKEMI NURSING 19/MHS02/060 GST112 THE CORONA VIRUS Corona virus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease,diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow). Due to the rapid spread of the virus, the best way to slow down the transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protects yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face and also staying indoors. These has taken the right steps to battle this pandemic, the government of Nigeria tends to forget that Nigerian is a third world country and majority of her citizens belong to the class division and this has various effects on the citizens. The effects which lockdown and restriction of movement has caused in Nigeria are countless but some of them include; high criminal activities, high Cost of living and increased violence. High criminal activities: Most Nigerian citizens generate incomes on daily basis from normal jobs like moulding of blocks, carrying of building blocks,selling of goods in market and on the roads. Due to the cause of this lockdown there has unavailability jobs. The government on the other hands don’t even care about them and for their needs, without these people jobs they don’t have food to eat. In other to that the government they have resulted to criminals. There is an increase of crime in Lagos and Ogun state particularly. High Cost of living : cause of the lockdown there has been an increase in the cost of living. People go to the market and find things they have been buying for a higher price. Those who seek to sell also use opportunities to exploit others, although it cannot be helped because these are difficult times for everyone. It’s also because of the restriction of movement and it is to their advantage because people little or no choice on where to purchase their essential needs from. Increase violence: there have been an increase in the number of security personals found on the streets. Some of the officers abuse their power and beat up citizens. On the other hand citizens are taken the laws into their hands and retaliate. The rate of violence has risen to a great extent in Warri, Delta state. There was a declaration of a 14 days lockdown in all states in Nigeria, due to the continuous rise in the numbers of cases everyday. Everyone can do is to stay safe and clean at home and wait
